Purcell's 'King Arthur' with Král, Weynants and Junker from Utrecht
Concert from the Utrecht Early Music Festival. Purcell's 'King Arthur' is a semi-opera in five acts with a libretto by John Dryden. The plot is based on the battles between King Arthur's Britons and the Saxons, rather than the legends of Camelot (although Merlin does make an appearance). It is a Restoration spectacular, including such supernatural characters as Cupid and Venus plus references to the Germanic gods of the Saxons, Woden, Thor, and Freya. Performers:
Caroline Weynants: Philidel.
Tomás Král: Aeolus, Grimbald.
Sophie Junker: Nereid, Cupid.
Sebastian: Cold genius.
Lionel Meunier: Pan.
Kristen Witmer, Robert Buckland, Olivier Berten.
Sebastian Myrus: Comus.
Zsuzsi Tóth, Kristen Witmer: Venus.
Kristen Witmer: Honour.
Vox Luminis. La Fenice. Conductor: Jean Tubéry.
